The hardware store on the corner of Depot Row, a downtown Elmhollow fixture for more than sixty years, reopened last week under new local ownership after sitting dark since January.
The buyers, a couple who grew up in the valley, kept the old wooden shelving and the well-worn plank floors but reorganized the back rooms and added weekend hours. Regulars will still find the nail bins by weight near the front counter.
What’s new, what’s the same
- Open seven days a week for the first time in years, including Sunday afternoons
- A revived tool-sharpening service on Saturdays
- The same paint-mixing counter and the cat that sleeps in the window
The reopening fills one of three empty storefronts on the block, a small but welcome sign for a downtown that has struggled to hold onto foot traffic. Neighboring shopkeepers say a busy hardware store draws customers who then wander next door.
The owners plan a small ribbon-cutting later this month and say they are hiring two part-time clerks.
